National Weather and Climate Prediction Center Opens at UMD

The eye of weather and climate prediction for the nation is now a centerpiece of M Square, the University of Maryland Research Park. This week, the federal government officially opened the long-awaited Center for Weather and Climate Prediction of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The new center brings together more than 800 NOAA employees from several different outdated buildings and puts them in an innovative, state-of-the-art facility designed by a team of architects led by University of Maryland alum Roger Schwabacher M.A. Arch. ’99.

NOAA Moving Forecasting Center to College Park

After several decades in an aging, antiquated building, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is in the process of moving its Center for Weather and Climate Prediction to a new $100 million facility to University of Maryland at College Park.

The center’s new location, in the city’s M Square research campus, will place the forecasting agency in a high-tech enclave. NOAA’s biggest office complex is eight miles away in Silver Spring, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center is six miles away and U-Md. is two miles away.

UMD Led Research Yields Key to Better Predictions of El Nino

A University of Maryland scientist and an undergraduate Indian student he mentored in India have uncovered a major new finding about El Nino — the cyclical climate event that appears every 2-7 years, sometimes with major global weather impacts such as massive flooding in some regions and severe droughts in others and resulting major economic impacts.

UMD & Northrop Grumman Develop Cybersecurity Partnership

University of Maryland and global security leader Northrop Grumman recently formed a new partnership, with the goal of creating a new generation of advanced cybersecurity professionals. Advances in government computer networks have brought with them a host of new potential security threats, but some say the U.S. has lagged in developing experts to combat the problems. The University of Maryland is now taking steps to fill that void.

The new program, Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students (ACES), will “produce a new generation of experts prepared to take on real-world cybersecurity challenges,” said Patrick O’Shea, UMd.’s Vice President for Research.

FDA Awards UMD New Center for Regulatory Science

The University of Maryland has created a new Center of Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation (CERSI), funded by an initial $1 million grant from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The center will focus on modernizing and improving the ways drugs and medical devices are reviewed and evaluated.

ECE Chair O’Shea Named UMD VP for Research

Dr. Patrick O’Shea who is currently chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and co-director of the Maryland Cybersecurity Center, has been named The University of Maryland’s new vice president for research. O’Shea promises greater rewards for faculty innovation and new initiatives to encourage entrepreneurship, commercialization and technology transfer. He will assume the new post July 1.

Skanska Tapped for $45M NOAA Office/Lab Building

Skanska USA’s building business unit has been awarded a contract to complete a 268,000-square-foot office building and lab space for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Prince Georges County, Maryland.

The four-story building will include general office space, laboratories, a data center, a hot deli, a 500-seat auditorium and a four-story atrium. The project also includes a stand-alone parking garage that can hold up to 685 vehicles.
